Managing our environmental impact at the Brighton Marathon Weekend

Find out what steps we are taking to manage the environmental impacts of this incredible event.

Pre event

  • Our entry system offers everyone the choice of having a tree planted instead of having a Finisher T-shirt through our partnership with Trees Not Tees
  • Runners can also choose to not take a medal
  • You.Smart.Thing. travel planning tool helps participants with their travel plans - highlighting the lowest carbon travel methods and offering the option to make a voluntary donation to remove the carbon associated with their travel

On the day

  • The finisher’s medal is made from recycled zinc alloy
  • Kitbags are made from sugarcane, a type of bioplastic that is recyclable
  • Event T-shirts are made from 100% recycled polyester
  • There will be tap water refill stations at each Start Area and at the Finish for both the 10K and the Marathon. Water will be available at refill points at Preston Park for the Brighton Miles too
  • For the 10K there are two water refill points on the course
  • At the Marathon, tap water refill is provided at six locations around the course for runners who are carrying their own container (hydration vest or hand-held running bottle)
  • For runners choosing bottled water, Buxton Natural Mineral Water bottles are made from 100 percent recycled plastic (excluding cap and label) and are collected separately, returned to Buxton and recycled into new bottles. These are 250ml bottles, specially produced for London Marathon Events by Buxton and are designed to help save water and plastic
  • Those who have opted out of a medal can visit our Finish Line Selfie Station for a special finisher’s photo opportunity
  • Electric vehicles, provided by Rivervale, are used on course as lead vehicles and make up the majority of the operational vehicle fleet for this event
  • Cups used at HIGH5 stations are composted
  • Finisher trophies are made from plastic collected from the sea along the south coast of the UK
  • Bike parking is available at Preston Park and Hove Lawns
  • Generators are powered with HVO (a vegetable oil fuel that replaces diesel)
