She is still a relative marathon novice, having run just five marathons including her debut in London last year where she finished second in 2:16:23, and the Paris Olympic Games marathon where she was the silver medallist behind Sifan Hassan. Prior to marathon running, Assefa’s background was over the shorter distances on the track. She was an 800m specialist and becomes the first woman in history to break two minutes in the 800m and 2:20 in the marathon. She competed in the 800m at the 2016 Olympic Games but an Achilles injury meant she then had to turn her attentions to road racing.

Starting out as a club runner with London club Clapham Chasers, she ran her first London Marathon in 2016 when she finished in 2:55:41. During the Covid-19 lockdown, Harvey was made redundant from her work as a lawyer and put all her attention into running. Since then she has become the sixth fastest Brit of all time for the marathon with a 2:23:21 time set in Chicago in 2023 and represented Great Britain at a World Championships and Olympic Games. Her Olympic Games experience at the 2024 Paris Games was one she will always remember but more for the pain than the glory. She elevated her illustrious career to even greater heights in 2024 when she won the Paris Olympic Games marathon in a new Olympic record of 2:22:55. Incredibly, the victory came less than 48 hours after Hassan clinched a bronze medal in the 10,000m final and earlier in the competition, she also won a bronze medal in the 5,000m, achieving a feat no athlete had managed at the Olympics since 1952 – winning medals in the 5,000m, 10,000m, and the marathon at the same Games. Hassan is also the only woman in history to win medals at a middle-distance event and both long-distance races at one Games. During the Tokyo Olympics in 2021, she won gold medals in the 5,000m and 10,000m events and a bronze medal in the 1500m. She was born in Adama, Oromia, Ethiopia, and raised in the countryside of Kersa in the Munesa district of the Arsi Zone of Oromia. She was a recreational runner there. Notes: Kiplimo will make a much-anticipated marathon debut at the TCS London Marathon just two months after shattering the world record for the half marathon. The Ugandan became the first man to run inside 57 minutes for the half marathon when he ran 56: 42 at the Barcelona Half Marathon. Kiplimo has been a prodigy in distance running since becoming his country’s youngest-ever Olympian at the Rio 2016 Olympics when he competed in the 5,000m event at age 15.  He won a 10,000m bronze medal at the Tokyo Olympics in 2021, before claiming a 10,000m bronze medal once again at the World Championships in July 2022 and then picking up 5,000m and 10,000m gold medals a month later at the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham. Kiplimo’s first success at a major championship came at the 2017 World Cross Country Championships when he won the U20 title on home soil in Kampala, and he became a world cross-country champion at senior men’s level six years later. Kiplimo has three half-brothers who are also athletes: Victor Kiplangat, the 2023 world marathon champion; Oscar Chelimo, and Robert Chemonges.

Notes: Mutiso had a spectacular first taste of the TCS London Marathon in 2024, after a dramatic surprise win which saw him get the better of the legendary Kenenisa Bekele (ETH). This was his first victory at an Abbott World Marathon Major event, which enabled him to make Kenya’s marathon team at the Paris 2024 Olympics where he finished 21st after running 2:10:31 on the gruelling Paris course. Mutiso’s only other marathon victory was in 2023 when he ran 2:05:09 to win the Prague Marathon. Later the same year (2023) he set his marathon PB in Valencia to cap off an impressive year, finishing second with a time of 2:03:11. Mutiso has also competed as a track athlete for just over a decade in the 5,000m and 10,000m events, and he won a 3,000m bronze medal at the World Youth Championships back in 2013. Notes: One of the most experienced marathon runners on the circuit, it is surprising that Nageeye has yet to run the TCS London Marathon. After chipping away at his marathon best since his first run over the distance in 2014, Nageeye’s big break through came at the Tokyo Olympic Games in 2021 where he won a silver medal. Since then he has gone on to win the Rotterdam Marathon twice (in 2022 and 2024), which included setting a Dutch national record of 2:04:45 in the second of his wins. After three years of going close at the TCS New York City Marathon, Nageeye claimed victory last year for his first Abbott World Marathon Majors victory. Born in Dharwanaaje, Somalia, Nageeye resettled in the Netherlands as a refugee aged six. He was a training partner of Sir Mo Farah.

Notes: Jake Smith has only run one marathon and in that race he wasn’t expecting to finish. The Cardiff AC athlete was a pacemaker in the Cheshire Elite Marathon in April 2021 and scheduled to drop out at 17 miles. But feeling good, Smith pushed on to record a time of 2:11:00. It capped a golden spell for Smith where he also ran a 60:31 half marathon (making him the fifth fastest Brit in history). But he was forced to take time out of the sport after being diagnosed with RED-S (a state of chronic low energy availablity). He returned in 2024 and was second at The Big Half. 2025 will be his London Marathon debut.

After a successful career on the track where the highlight was a bronze medal in the 10,000m at the 2016 Olympics, Tola’s marathon career has got better with experience. After coming so close to gold at the 2017 World Championships in London (when he finished runner-up), Tola finally became the world champion in 2022 when he won the marathon at the Oregon World Championships (2:05:36). It came after he finished third at the 2022 Tokyo Marathon and won the 2021 Amsterdam Marathon in a PB of 2:03:39. Tola has also had success at Abbott World Marathon Majors events, winning the New York City marathon in 2023. His best result in London was third in 2023.

Notes: Alex became a household name in the summer of 2024 when he produced an incredible and unlikely comeback to win a gold medal in the triathlon at the Paris Olympic Games. After trailing New Zealand’s Hayden Wilde for most of the final run section of the triathlon, Yee dug deep into his inner reserves to fight back and he passed his rival in the final minute of the race to secure a memorable gold medal. Yee then added to his tally of Olympic medals with a bronze in the team relay later in the Games. That brought his tally of Olympic medals to four after he won a silver in the individual and gold in the mixed relay at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics (held in 2021). Yee is a born and raised Londoner who has shown throughout his career that he could compete among the very best in athletics and triathlon. He raced the Mini London Marathon five times in his career (representing Lewisham) in 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013, and 2015, finishing third on two occasions (in 2015 and 2013).
